The short answer is no, not entirely, and yes for most of what you use the drive for. That sounds like a dodge. It is not. The two things are good at different jobs, and the reason people keep buying SSDs they do not need is that nobody separates the jobs out loud.
So here is the separation. If you carry a drive between machines mainly to have your files with you and to hand work to someone else, a cloud drive replaces it. If you carry it because you are pushing hundreds of gigabytes through an editing timeline, or because you need a copy that exists whether or not the internet does, it does not.
Where the cloud drive clearly wins
The advantages are not really about storage. They are about what stops going wrong.
- Handoffs stop being physical. Passing a drive across a desk means the other person now has the files and you do not, or you both have copies that immediately start to diverge. Two Macs connected to the same cloud location are looking at one set of files. There is no moment of transfer to schedule, and no version to reconcile afterward.
- A drive you left somewhere is a real event. An SSD in a bag at an airport is unencrypted access to everything on it for whoever finds it, plus the loss of the files if that was the only copy. Cloud storage has failure modes, but leaving it in a rental car is not one of them.
- Any authorized Mac becomes your Mac. Your machine dies on a Tuesday. With a drive, you need the drive and a working port. With cloud storage, you need credentials, which means a loaner, a desktop at the office, or a new laptop gets you back to work in the time it takes to connect.
- Capacity is a setting, not a purchase. Running out of room on a physical drive means buying another one and then deciding what lives where. Running out in the cloud means a bigger bill, which is annoying but not a logistics problem.
- Nothing depends on a cable. Ports change, adapters go missing, enclosures fail in ways that make the disk inside hard to reach. A drive is a device, and devices break in physical ways.
Where the physical drive still wins
None of this makes an SSD obsolete, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.
- Large media libraries. Video, raw photo catalogs, sample libraries, virtual machine images. These want fast, consistent, local disk access, and a network mount cannot provide it. Scrubbing a timeline off a cloud drive is not a workflow. Working from a local disk and archiving to the cloud is.
- No connection, no negotiation. A drive works in a basement, on a job site, in a building with concrete walls, and on a plane. There is no sync window, no login, and no dependency on someone else's service having a good day.
- Archival you control. A drive on a shelf keeps costing nothing. Cloud storage keeps billing, and it keeps billing for data you touch once a year. For a long tail of finished work, that math favors a disk, especially two disks in two places.
- Predictable cost. You pay once for a drive. Cloud storage is capacity plus, depending on the provider, transfer, and a month where you pull down an entire archive is a month you notice.
- Speed for bulk moves. Moving a terabyte over a cable takes minutes. Moving it over a typical business connection takes hours and sometimes a day. Physics is undefeated.
Offline folders close part of the gap
The strongest argument for the drive is the second one on that list: it works when nothing else does. That is the gap offline folders address, and they address part of it rather than all of it.
The idea is simple. Before you disconnect, you choose specific folders to download, and they land in a folder on your Mac. Then you work from those local copies with no connection at all. In Orbit the downloaded folders stay available even with the app closed, and you can enable two-way syncing so the edits you made offline upload when you are back online. If you would rather nothing you do offline touch the cloud copy, you can keep the folder in download-only mode.
What this actually buys you is the flight, the commute, the client site with bad Wi-Fi, and the coffee shop where the network is technically present and practically useless. What it does not buy you is the full contents of your storage in your bag. Only the folders you selected come with you, they use real space on your Mac's disk, and you have to have thought about it in advance while you still had a connection. That last part is the honest catch. The drive requires no foresight. Offline folders require a little.
How to actually decide
Ignore the product categories and sort your files by what they need.
- Working project files you move between machines. These go to the cloud drive. This is the category the SSD was mostly serving, and it is the category where handoff pain and version confusion live.
- Active heavy media. Keep on local disk while the project is hot. Push the finished result to the cloud when it cools off.
- Things you need without a connection. Select them as offline folders before you leave, and keep the selection small enough that it finishes downloading before you do.
- Archive. Two copies, different places, at least one of them not in the same building as the other. A cloud bucket counts as one of the places. A single drive in a drawer does not count as two.
A note that applies to every row of that table: syncing is not backup. A tool that mirrors your files also mirrors your mistakes unless it is designed to pause and ask, and even then a separate backup of anything important is the thing that saves you. Cloud, drive, or both, keep one.
The takeaway
Most people carrying an SSD between machines are using maybe ten percent of a physical drive's real advantages and paying the full cost in lost drives, stale copies, and handoffs that require both people to be in the same room. For that use, a cloud drive in Finder with a few folders kept offline is straightforwardly better.
But the drive keeps earning its place for big media and for the archive, and the honest recommendation is not one or the other.
